I used to be on a local solar / electric car team where we designed and built solar cars and raced them in various races (Tour de Sol, Mt. Washington hill climb, etc...). I drove the Sol Survivor IV in the first leg of the Tour de Sol race from NYC to DC back in '96. It's been quite a few years since i've been on the team tho. I later purchased a Honda Civic Hybrid. It was fun to have, a 'normal' semi-electric car, but because of the harsh winters in New England, after 2 years traded it in for a Subaru Outback sedan. Sometimes in the really cold weather the electric motor would not work, and in general in the winter the MPG's were not as good as in the summer (about 35-40mpg winter / 45-50mpg summer). As far as cost, it was still more expensive to own than a standard car, but the tax deduction helped and it was fun not stopping at gas stations all the time. I went on a trip to Canada with family (they drove their 41' RV). We both filled up the tanks at the start (southern NH), then stopped at the last gas station before Canada. Gas was cheaper then, but it cost them over $50 to top it off and only cost me $3. Ahhh, good times... I'm waiting for the 'plug in' electric cars to become available - with either hydrogen or gas as the secondary or backup fuel, and throw in some solar panels for fun - preferably a Subaru Outback sedan!

yea a 1999 civic hybrid
love it and hate it
love because i pay about 25$ a month in gas
hate it because you have to replace battery every ten years
batt. cost 7,000$

This is obviously not my real car. I'm really looking into a hybrid....any thoughts? anyone?
